Only a few people know Haiti for all its high potentials, from Mountains views to clear crystal beaches with white sands, and you better believe it is one of the safest countries not just in the Caribbean, but throughout all the Americas according to UNODC. However, lack of tourist activities can make your trip to Haiti expensive. For the past seven years, I have been learning how to reduce the cost of my trip to Haiti since I travel there often with different groups of people, and today I would love to share some of my hacks with you.
- Group Traveling: Group travel does not apply only for Haiti, the best way to reduce travel costs is to travel with a group of people, you can share many of the expenses, including Room, Transportation, and sometimes food.
- Book your flight early and book your trip with Sunrise Airways. If you are traveling from Florida Sunrise, just added two very low-cost flights that will allow you to save money on your airfare. They serve Orlando and Miami, If you are a resident of Tampa, Orlando or even Fort Lauderdale, you can save a bunch of money. If you live outside of Florida, the best option is to make your reservation very early. I usually travel with Spirit, sometimes American Airline, with your member cards from these company you can also save a lot of money, but only because I don’t travel with bags, I just go with a personal bag most of the time.
- Bag packing: If you plan to bring two or three bags you can expect to be charged a lot of money; This is not a smart thing to do when you are going in a place to explore. Most airlines allow you to travel with your personal bag free of charge, so take advantage of that.
- In most cases, I use local transportation Tap-Tap, I also use moto taxi, I will not advise you to take a moto taxi, depends on the driver, it can be hazardous, but keep in mind, it is also the fastest way to get around because of heavy traffics. People are very friendly, and they will help you with direction; however, it is better if you are familiar with the areas. If you travel with a group, you can take a taxi from the Airport, or arrange for transportation before your arrival.
- Stay at Guesthouses instead of big hotels: One of the things that will cost you the most during your trip to Haiti is a place to stay. If you are on business trip, it is ok to stay at places like Royal Oasis or the Marriott. If not you want to choose a guesthouse to host you and your group. Some guesthouses offer the same services as a hotel for the better price; you can also share rooms with no problem.
- If you plan to save money, don’t eat at the hotel restaurants. You might end up spending the food money for three days on a Burger with fries, just kidding. But it is somehow correct; you want to find decent restaurants that allow you to eat some very great food for less.
